SYTYCD – 7/30/09 – Top 6
07/30/2009Last night on SYTYCD, the Top 6 took the stage to attempt to prove why they belong to be in the finale next week. Who really stood out this week? Who will be moving on to the final show of the season? I guess we’ll find out tonight, but until then, here’s some food for thought on last night’s show.
I’d like to note that this is the first week in a while that I have actually liked almost all the dances. The choreographers really picked it up this week!
The night opened with an all boy routine choreographed by the Mistress of the strange and dark, Sonia. Really great male dancers are hard to come by and are usually so stylized that it is hard to get a good clean dance and synchronicity in a number like this, but the boys overcame the challenge and looked so well put together.
Jeanine chose Ade out of the hat this week and the were given a Samba. Jeanine shined like a bright sexy star throughout this entire number and Ade was there to support. Yes, Ade possibly missed a note here and there in style, but overall this should have been a hot tamale train number for sure. I was very confused by the judges on their response, because usually that would have hit them right in the gut with a big WOW. (Mary did later come back to Jeanine and apologize for not saying how AMAZING she was in the first number. Thanks Mary!)
Solo’s for Kayla have always been very normal for me. There’s just something about them that lacks energy or passion supporting it. It’s good dancing, just doesn’t feel like there is that emotional connection that helps us as an audience bond with her.
Melissa seems a little (not) thrilled to find she had picked Evan as her partner. Come on Melissa, at least put on a good face for National television. To Evan’s delight they had picked a Broadway routine, and this one was definitely right up his alley. I fault the camera crew for not getting more close ups during this number. It was all about acting and face, not the choreography necessarily, and I think the way it was shot made it hard to get the full grasp of how good Evan especially was in this piece.
Ade’s solos are always so super strong. He consistently has these special moments during his solo’s that make them stand out and really portray him well as a dancer.
Kayla and Brandon are a match made in heaven in the Stacey Tookey Modern routine they were given last night. Their strengths complimented each other and made their work put into this number really leap off the stage with a strong portrayal or what it’d be like to be in a relationship with a married man.
Melissa has done the same solo or something like it from day one. I know she tries to remind everyone that her character is “Ballerina who can it all”, but she could easily leave that up to the judges, since they say that everytime she does a dance.
Tabitha and Napoleon are back this week, and lucky them, they got the pair of Jeanine and Ade in one of the best numbers of the night. Centered around roommates who are being evicted, the play with the cardboard boxes along with the chemistry and unity of J & A made this number incredible. Jeanine has proved her way into the finale this week. If she is voted off, it will be a very sad day.
Brandon did a repeat of his audition piece for his solo tonight, and he saved it for the perfect moment. What a night to bring this back, and boy, did it wow the judges all over again. Not only was he half-naked, but he danced like he remembered what the bottom felt like last week. He deserves to be in the finale, 100%.
Evan got another lucky number for him, even if Melissa felt unlucky to be partnering him. The quickstep given to them was full of spunk and very old school, right up Evan’s alley. They looked great doing it, and it was really a fun number.
Jeanine knows her strong suit and that is being this goofy sex-pot. (I never thought those two words would be used together.) She is so cute and so talented and her personality really shows in her solos.
Evan brings us a classic solo as he reminds us of his Broadway background, always a treat and much fun to watch. Even if he isn’t the strongest Male dancer in the competition, he has stayed true to his style and proved he is an extremely great competitor.
Brandon and Kayla come back for the end of the night with a Doriana Disco routine. The judges lost their minds over it, but I was more reminded of how much I miss Jeanette. Kayla is so good, but I am taken back to when Jeanette and Brandon did that over the top Disco number weeks and weeks back. Oh Jeanette, You should be occupying one of those spots in the finale.
Finishing up last night’s show was an all girl-powered number. Sonia is back once again with a routine based on female superheroes, putting some choreo in these girl’s hands that is just to die for! They all were trully amazing in it. I think that Melissa did fall a little unnoticed, but for the most part it was just a treat.
My “wants” for the finale are Jeanine, Kayla, Brandon, & Ade. Am I going to get that? I doubt it, but one can always dream. Vote below and let me know who you want to see in the finale!
