I Stand Corrected! SYTYCD – 7/23/09 Elimination

07/23/2009

so_you_think_you_can_danceTonight’s elimination also marked the 100th episode of SYTYCD! For me, the repeat dances from past seasons and Katie Holmes’ tribute to Judy Garland took a quick backseat to the elimination of the dancers that we are so involved with right now.

I now admit that in my previous post I was wrong in my choices of Evan and Kayla, but who could have actually chosen the exact two to go tonight. It really is anybody’s game tonight, and who knew who the so-dedicated fans of SYTYCD would actually pick up the phone for. I think that it is pretty clear that Evan squeaked by, not on techinque or talen,t but a very strong fan base and personality. Kayla was just an “eenie-meenie-minee-mo” for me when it came to the female contenders this year.

I was quite confused when the announcement of Katie Holmes appearing on the show first launched into the media, but last night those ponderings were cleared up as we heard that she and Tom are helping fund the Dizzy Feet Foundation. Her performance was just awkward for me, with clear lipsynching and the apparent fact that it had been previously recorded, I think that for the most part the audience was nothing but underwhelmed.

I do think that the former contestants coming back to perform the Emmy Nominated dances was a great choice. Although still a bit strange as it was clear that the performances were pre-recorded, it was great to see where the show has come from and where it is headed. It also reminded me that this season has had a lack of really stand-out choreography. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some absolutely breath-taking and hard-hitting numbers this year, but it feels like someone dropped the ball along the way in the choreography department. Nigel even commented on the “flatness” of the show on Wednesday night. What happened to every number being  or having a “WOW” moment? It certainly is how they started out this season on the first episode with the Top 20.

My jaw completely hit the floor when Janette was the one to go last night. After comments of being absolutely flawless from all the judges this entire season and even being praised as Mia Michael’s favorite dancer this season, how could this happen? After that I was expecting Brandon to go home to REALLY SHOCK us, but thankfully Jason’s stint on the show proved that there is some justice in the world. He was obviously one of the weakest guys having already being in the bottom several weeks in a row. Yes, he had shown some improvements in the past weeks, but apparently that did not outshine the guys who had proven themselves week after week.

Overall, the Janette elimination shocked the pants off of me, as well as Katie’s “tribute” to Judy Garland. Notice that Judy’s brother didn’t seem to be jumping up and down.

I watch for the Wednesdays and dread the Thursdays! Thanks for reading and stay tuned in for the action over the next two weeks!
