So You Think You Can Dance – Top 14 Dancers, 7 Couples

07/02/2009

so_you_think_you_can_danceThis week on SYTYCD, the group of 14 dancers were thrown for another loop as the 7 couples drew a new type of dance out of the hat.  Lucky for some, not so lucky for others. I’m just going to lay this out for you instead of tell you about a show you already saw.

Straight out the gate, Here are my predictions for the bottom three:    Evan & Randy – Jason & Kaitlyn – Carla & Vitolio

I am a HUGE fan of two out of the three couples I mentioned above. I’ll tell you why I think they’ll be in the bottom though.

Evan & Randy were suited up for a very cute Broadway routine that I think was one of the first numbers that just didn’t work as well as the others for them. They are a very short couple, and the choreography was an amazon woman apparently towering almost an extra foot over them. (A very respected and talented Amazon Woman, Joey Dowling, I might add.) Usually these two have such spunk and character mixed with excellent dancing, but this one was just a dip down from their other stuff.

Jason & Kaitlyn really did do an excellent job with such a strange piece. Sadly, there was odd choice in costuming for the number, and the extremely odd idea behind this piece might have been off-putting for some, as it was with Mary Murphy. Do these guys always get the weird costumes or what? Bollywood, Roman Warriors, ALIENS?! What’s to come next week? Anything to have Jason’s shirt off, apparently.

Lastly, I have to apologize, but I have disliked Vitolio from the start and am ready to see him go for good. If they are not in the bottom three this week it is due to a fantastic routine and not because of their personalities. Like I always say, they have to have been good dancers to get this far, but these two are just blah. Carla lacks that extra spark to take her to the next level, and Vitolio is just…weird.

Highlights this week were: Phillip & Jeanine – Kayla & Kupono – Janette & Brandon

Phillip & Jeanine were unsurprisingly good at their routine. We have seen them do Hip-hop before so no big Wow’s. Kayla & Kupono tackled a vampire-influenced dance that’s already on the fast track to being safe with the U.S.’s obsession with Bloodsuckers. Janette & Brandon give every dance their couple signature thrill and pizazz.

Melissa and Ade are the absolute couple to beat. Stepping up on every thing that has been thrown at them proves them to be the most consistent couple yet, though Brandon and Janette are on their heels.

If it were up to me tonight, Vitolio and Carla would be the contestants to be eliminated. There you have it.
